2024 Annual Meeting and Fall Banquet
When? October 17, 2024, starting at 5:30 pm
Where? Reedsburg County Club, 3003 E Main Street, Reedsburg
Presentation: Reedsburg Rises - Civil Unrest 1851 & 1873
“Our people were ‘mad’ when it was first known, and as the day progressed, they got ‘madder and madder…’” Thus wrote The Reedsburg Free Press on January 2, 1874 about an extraordinary incident that had occurred just a few days earlier at the railroad depot. When federal troops tried to deport members of Ho-Chunk Chief Aahucago’s family, Reedsburg citizens literally stood in the way. The event was a turning point in attitudes about Indigenous People and one that caught the attention of officials in Washington DC. It wasn’t the first time the people of Reedsburg had taken matters into their own hands. Twenty-two years earlier, another incident occurred which came to be known as the Sawlog War. This time the “war” was between Reedsburg and Baraboo and was only resolved when federal officials intervened. These two early examples of civil unrest will be the subject of a presentation by SCHS Executive Director Paul Wolter at the Society’s annual fall banquet and meeting.
The banquet will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Reedsburg Country Club, 3003 E Main Street, Reedsburg. Cocktail time will begin at 5:30 pm with a cash bar, and a delicious buffet dinner will be served at 6 pm. The annual meeting, including election of board members, will begin at 7 pm followed by the SCHS Year in Review and the Reedsburg presentation. RESERVATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCTOBER 10. Don’t miss this evening of history, fellowship, and dinner in historic Reedsburg!
