Historic Homes at the State Capitol

Historic Homes at the State Capitol

April 2022 Display

Recently, SCHS volunteers along with photographer Eric Oxendorf installed an exhibit in the state capitol rotunda showcasing historic homes of Sauk County. The exhibit, entitled The Beauty of Midwest Homes - Pre 1940, includes twenty-four photos taken by Oxendorf who is a nationally recognized architectural and industrial photographer with over forty-two years of experience. His work has appeared in numerous national publications including Architectural Digest. Oxendorf has also published two photography books, Domes of America and The Milwaukee City Hall. His most notable exhibitions have been one man shows at the Honolulu Academy of Art, Kohler Art Center and the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

This exhibit brings a heightened awareness of historic residential Wisconsin architecture, its craftsmanship and where possible the architects behind the designs. The Sauk County Historical Society provided the historical research and text for each home and the whole project was brought together under the artistic direction of Carol Kratochwill to showcase some of the best preserved examples of historic homes from Sauk County.

The exhibit was funded by the Wisconsin Architects Foundation which is a nonprofit membership organization of design and construction industry professionals dedicated to improving the quality of the built environment through research and education. Its primary mission is to enhance the public's awareness of architecture through its commitment to architectural education.

The exhibit will be at the state capitol through the month of April. The building is open to the public so if you are in Madison stop in and take a look!
