Backman Boy. On Monday while Dr. Hulburt was eating his dinner, a horse and buggy rapidly approached his residence and halted in front of his door. In the buggy were a driver and Mrs. August Backman, carrying her 2 1/2 year old boy in her lap. The horse was foaming, being rapidly driven, and the lady was white from anxiety concerning her child, which she regarded as being in a very critical condition. After an examination and a few tender words of regret and consolation the mother departed with her child. She was now in tears for she had learned that in her arm she had been carrying a lifeless patient. It was learned that the child had been playing a short distance from house near an embankment, at the foot of which the mother found it, as she supposed in an unconscious condition from the effects of a fall; and picking it up and wrapping it in her shawl and arms she had made haste to procure medical aid. Bacon, William. William Bacon, age 82 of Lake Delton, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 at his residence with his family by his side. Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday, October 27, 2001, at the Dells Delton United Methodist Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Richard Bonney officiating. William will be cremated and his cremains will be interred at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Baraboo, Wisconsin. William was born August 31, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Glen and Alice (Brown) Bacon. he grew up on the west side of Chicago and attended Austin High School. Right out of high school, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and attended the military cadet program during the rise of Pearl Harbor. He later attended Fenn College in Cleveland, Ohio. In August of 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and honorably discharged in February of 1946 as a sergeant. He then attended St. Louis University and with the skills of an entrepreneur developed his own business known as Ozark Distributing Company in St. Louis. In 1950, he returned to Chicago and was a sales manager for Gits Moulding Corporation. In July of 1953, he married Marianne Lundberg and this marriage was blessed with five children. In the early 1970s, William founded the Bacon Company that specialized in housewares and was the manufacturing representative. With this he stayed busy until his retirement in 1999. He and his wife had moved to the Dells in 1996. William was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was a friend to everyone he met always being a good humanitarian. William is survived by his wife, Marianne; sons, Bill (Cathy) of Rock Springs, Wisconsin, Bob (Renata) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Jim and John (Karin), all of Wisconsin Dells; daughter, Kathy (Steve) Zowin of Lake Delton; grandchildren, Carlie, Shannon, Taylor, Billy, Robert, Alley, Steven, Nick, James and Taryn; and cousins, Marlys Stoneberg of Reedsburg, Wisconsin and Marion Whitney of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be held at the Dells Delton United Methodist Church of Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. The Picha Funeral Home and Crematory of Lake Delton, Wisconsin assisted the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of choice in memory of William would be appreciated.

Bailey, Arthur J. Arthur J. Bailey passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2003 at St. Clare Meadows at the age of 94. Art was born on February 14, 1909 in Plano, Illinois to Charles and Martha (Degroff) Bailey. He was united in marriage to Doris Kluender on August 7, 1930 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo. Art was very active in the community serving in the Lions Club, on the Sauk County fair board, the county board, FSA and various other community committees. He was a faithful follower and supporter of the Baraboo High School sports and rarely missed a sporting event for 30 years. Art was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran church, serving as president and various offices throughout his life. In his later years he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and playing cards with family and friends. Art is survived by one son Richard (Donna) Bailey; 3 grandsons Brent (Pat) Bailey, Bruce (Angie) Bailey, Brad (and friend Jennifer) Bailey, one granddaughter Brandie Bailey; 4 Great-grandchildren Sydney, Brody, Fischer and Forrest all of Baraboo, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Art was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris in 1998, one son Donald, and one brother Glenn. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Myron Schwanke officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Redlin Funeral Home and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the Church. Bailey, Richard C. “Dick”. Richard C. "Dick" Bailey, age 63, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 at St. Clare Hospital after a two and a half year battle with lung cancer. Dick was born on Sept. 23, 1941 to Arthur and Doris (Kluender) Bailey in Baraboo. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo. Dick was united in marriage to Donna Faye Diske on Feb. 3, 1962 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Brent, Bruce, Brad, and Brandie. Dick was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo, where he had served as congregation president and was active as part of the school board. He was also active in many community organizations including the Sauk County Agricultural Association, where he served as president of the Sauk County Fair Board. Dick served as Fairfield Township treasurer for 10 years. He had also previously held the position of treasurer of the Lake McDonald Property Owners Association. Dick was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was particularly proud of being a regular blood donor for over 40 years. Dick loved going to the family cabin in Eagle River, where over the years he had made many friends from the area. Dick is survived by his wife, Donna Faye of Baraboo; four children, Brent (Pat) Bailey, Bruce (Angie) Bailey, Brad Bailey and Jenny, and Brandie (Mike) Grob, all of Baraboo; four grandchildren, Sydney, Brody, Fischer and Forrest; other relatives; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Doris; and his brother, Donnie. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo with Pastor Myron Schwanke officiating. Interment will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at St. John's Lutheran Church on Friday, Sept. 9, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday, from 1 p.m. until the time of services, at the church. Baker, Barry. Barry Baker, age 64 of Lake Delton, Wisconsin died Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at the University Hospital of Madison, Wisconsin. Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2001 at 4:00 P.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin. According to Barry's wishes he will be cremated. Barry was born June 11, 1937 in Blue Island, Illinois the son of John and Enid (Huntington) Baker. He attended the General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan. In June of 1958 he married Jo Reckrodt, in Blue Island. Barry had lived on Lake Delton for many years where he enjoyed his favorite pastime of boating. He also was an entrepreneur, being a previous owner of the Ravina Inn from 1971 to 1981 and together with his wife owned and operated the Sunset Bay Resort on Lake Delton. He was a member of the Wisconsin Dells Lions Club, past member of Englewood, Florida Elks Club and served on the Lake Delton Village Board. Barry is survived by his wife, Jo; a son, John (Jamie) of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; daughter, Dawn of Lake Delton and Kelly (Jerry) Ball of Madison, Wisconsin and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held at Picha Funeral Home on Saturday from 3 P.M. until the time of service at 4 P.M.

 
Bartell, H. H. Bartell, living southwest of Loganville, was killed Thursday of last week by an accident. He and his wife had loaded cornstalks on a wagon and Mrs. Bartell went cross-lots to the house while he was to drive around. Shortly after he was found frightfully mangled. It seems that a pole at the front of the wagon broke while he was leaning on it and he fell forward between the horses, head downward and his feet catching in the harness. The horses ran away, dragging him over the ground with the result stated. Taken from the Reedsburg Free Press of November 7, 1895.

 Bartenbach, Carl. Carl Bartenbach, 76, Rock Springs, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 7, 1956 at his home. Friends may call at the Gant Funeral Home here until noon Monday. Survivors include his wife, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Behm, Beverly Hills, Calif.; a son, Allen, Glendale, Calif.; two brothers, Walter, of the state of Washington and William, Rock Springs; and two sisters, Mrs. Owen Richards, Oregon, and Mrs. Walter Schaefer, Owatonna, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 2 Monday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Springs.
 

Batz, Caroline E. Caroline E. Batz, age 77, of Waunakee, died on Monday, December 3, after an extended illness. She was born on June 18, 1924 in Plain, WI, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Frank) Martin. She was united in marriage on April 30, 1949 to Gerard R. Batz in Baraboo. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1991. She was a member of St. Mary of the Lake, Westport, and enjoyed baking Country Fare Fruit Cakes. She also enjoyed reading and loved her dogs. She is survived by her two sons, Tom Batz and Martin (Sue) Batz, both of Waunakee; 5 grandchildren: Dan, Tricia, Kenny, Greg and Randy; 1 great-grandchild, Taylor; and many cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gerard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 6, 2001 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 4360 Mary Lake Rd., Westport, with Fr. Dan Finnane officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Baraboo. Friends may call from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at the Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., where a Rosary Service will be held at 4:30 PM.
 

Baumgarten, Ralph A. Ralph A. Baumgarten, age 69, died on Monday, September 3, 2001. He was born on July 17, 1932 to Alexander and Ella (Ziemke) Baumgarten. Ralph was united in marriage to Ginny Dohm on August 19, 1972. Ralph was a dedicated worker and family man, who wil be missed by his wife of 29 years, Ginny; children, Shirley (Pat) Thielitz, James Grass, Dan Baumgarten, Teri (Shannon) Cash, Cindy (Phil) Roths; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; mother-in-law Clara Dohm; sister Judy (Charles) Reinfeldt. Further survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, four sisters, and three brothers. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison, WI. With burial to follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Madison, WI. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the church. Baumgarten, William W. William W. Baumgarten, 84, Loganville, died on Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Sauk County Health Care Center. He was born on Sept. 24, 1917 in the Town of Westfield, the son of William H. and Emma (nee Storte) Baumgarten. On Sept. 24, 1950 he married the former Viola E. Krueger. Bill was a lifelong area farmer. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hillpoint and a former member of the Sauk County Farmers Union. Survivors include his wife, Viola; three sons: Reuben (Annette) Baumgarten, Mauston, Phillip (Dottie) Baumgarten, Glenside, Penn., and Wilbert (Rhonda) Baumgarten, Watertown; nine grandchildren: Daisy, Amber, Travis, Joni, Kirk, Joshua, Matthew, Sarah and Elizabeth; two brothers: Edmund (Marie) Baumgarten, Oshkosh, and Melvin Baumgarten, Loganville; two sisters-in-law: Clara Baumgarten, North Freedom, and Mary Ellen Baumgarten, Reedsburg; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by six brothers: Herbert, Martin, Otto, Erwin, Arthur and Paul. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hillpoint with Rev. Richard Agenten officiating. Interment was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Loganville. The family received friends from 4 until 8 p.m. on Monday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg. Bayer, Ronald A. Ronald A. Bayer, 68, of La Crosse, died on Wednesday, October 24, at the Hillview Healthcare Center, La Crosse. He was born in Baraboo, Wis. on April 17, 1933 to Henry and Edna (Rau) Bayer. He married Ruth Krueger in Reedsburg, Wis. on May 28, 1955. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Ron was a 1957 graduate of UW-Madison and had worked as the Assistant Manager of the La Crosse District Social Security Administration for 32 years until his retirement in 1988. He had served on the United Way Social Planning Committee, was a member of the La Crosse Lions Club; and had presented pre-retirement planning seminars through WWTC. Ron was the 1982 recipient of the Ewell T. Barlett Humanity in Government award. He also held offices in his church and had served as financial advisor and director with the Occupational Rehabilitation Center. In addition to his wife Ruth, he is survived by two daughters, Terry (Al) Niebuhr of West Salem, Wis. and Julie (Douglas) Lawnicki of Eugene, Ore.; three sons, Dr. Michael (Cindy) Bayer of Duluth, Minn., Peter (Magdalena) Bayer of Dresden, Germany and Bradley (Suzanne) Bayer of Apple Valley, Minn.; nine grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Krueger of San Antonio, Texas; and sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Donald Thom of Hazelhurst, Wis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant sister. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 29, at 10 A.M. from Faith Lutheran Church of La Crosse. The Rev. James T. Cumming will officiate. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo, Wis. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 5 until 7 P.M. and again at the Church on Monday from 9 A.M. until the time of services. Beaty, John “Jack” Hayes, Sr. John "Jack" Hayes Beaty Sr. A memorial service for John "Jack" Hayes Beaty Sr., of Baraboo, WI, formerly of Chetek, WI, and Crossville, passed away Aug. 13, 1998. He was born Jan. 28, 1911 in Union City, IN, the son of Bruce and Julie Hayes Beaty. He married his first wife, Sidney Theone Burhans, in 1938. She passed away in 1961. Mr. Beaty then married Elizabeth A. Upchurch in 1962. After retiring from Sears and Roebuck Company, Mr. Beaty moved to Chetek, where he served as mayor for two and a half terms. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Upchurch Beaty of Baraboo; children, Beverly Bliss Schultz of Madison, WI, Lynn Welch of Denver, CO, Donna Chernowetz of Trenton, NJ, Lynda Pfankuch of Chetek, and John Hayes Beaty Jr. of Fulton, IL; grandchildren, Cindy Pertzborn and husband, Tom, of Dallas, TX, Allen Bliss and wife, Robyn, and Michael Bliss and wife, Gina, all of Boston, MA, Jordan Bliss of Madison, Michael Welch and wife, Terri, of Houston, TX, David Welch of Cincinnati, OH, Colin Chernowetz and wife, JoAnne Freed of Northhampton, PA, and Sarah Chernowetz of Trenton; great-grandchildren, Brandon Portzborn, Kayla Chernowetz and Erika Chernowetz; and brother, Robert Hayes Beaty and wife, Anne, of Reedsburg, WI. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sidney; his parents; and sister, Martha Belle Wise.
 

Beeson, Mary Catherine. Mrs. Mary Beeson (from Whittier Daily News?) Mary Catherine Moon was born Nov. 4, 1854, near Kokomo, Indiana, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edith Barker, at Redondo, Calif., January 31, 1930, aged 75 years, 2 months, 26 days. During the first year of her life, her parents, Solomon and Elizabeth Stringer-Moon joined a caravan of covered wagons in a move westward to the little Quaker settlement near Ironton, Wisconsin. Here her life was spent amid the rugged beauties of wild forests, running brooks, springs of water and craggy hills. Her education and recreations were in connection with the country school but under the influence and teaching of Jabez Brown of Spiceland Academy, Indiana, who had come to the settlement as its teacher. She was an attractive, happy girl of modest habit and kind disposition, a favorite among her associates. In February, 1876, she was married to William F. Beeson, a young farmer of the same place. Both attended the neighborhood meetings, were converted in early life, and were faithful members of the Friends Church. To them were born eight children, Fred M., now of South Gate, California; Bernie of Whittier; E. Lee of Los Angeles; Clarence, of Montebello; Mrs. Leila Overman, deceased; Mrs. Edith Barker, of Redondo, and Mrs. Edna Pickarts, of Los Angeles. In 1899 the family moved to Whittier, California, where the husband became an accomplished carpenter, and where the children grew to maturity and chose their mates. On April 5, 1921, the husband preceded his wife to the better land. She leaves beside her children, fourteen grandchildren, two brothers, W.E. Moon and T. J. Moon, and a sister, Mrs. Nettie Patton. She was a great soul in a frail body. She lived her Lord, her church, her family and her friends. She was of gentle nature, and ruled her household with love and tenderness, her greatest concern being the salvation and prosperity of her children and grandchildren. She was interested in every detail of church activity, but had little bodily strength with which to serve as she wished. "She did what she could." She knew the end was near and she looked forward to her departure with happy anticipation, saying "I will soon be at home." Her brother-in-law, Rev. S.D. Horine, from his sickbed sends this: "No one who ever heard her can forget with what tender reverence she asked the blessing at the family table. We loved her better the more we knew her." The funeral of Mary Moon-Beeson was held at 3 p.m., February 3, 1930, at the White-Emerson parlors, many friends and relatives attending. Floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, befitting the life so sweetly lived. College girls sweetly sang "Asleep in Jesus" and " Beautiful Isle of Somewhere;" the obituary was read by Lydia M. Cammack, an old time friend of the family. Rev. W. O. Trueblood read comforting portions from the Bible, offered earnest, tender prayer, and spoke briefly from the last chapter of Proverbs of the ideal woman. He emphasized the self sacrifice of a true mother, service money could never buy; the love none else but a mother could lavish and the faith she has in her own children and in her God, which bears her through and above all difficulties of life, and makes her more than conqueror in life and in death.
 

Behn, Mrs. Henry. Mrs. Henry Behn was born in Germany and came to Reedsburg when 3 years old, first living at Rocksbury, then moving to Westfield. She had the grippe which together with other complications caused her death, Wednesday, January 12, 1916 at 2:45, aged 64yr, 7mo, 30da. She leaves a family of 3 children, Edward, Alvin and Agnes. Four children preceded the mother in death. A short service was held at the home Sunday conducted by Rev. Popp and the remains were then taken to the Stone church in Westfield for burial. Behn, Bertha Elizabeth. Bertha Elizabeth Behn, nee Hinrichs, was born July 17, 1873 in the Town of Reedsburg, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hinrichs. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Reedsburg. She was united in marriage to Otto Behn on November 29, 1906, at St. John's Lutheran church of Reedsburg. She had lived with her husband on their farm in the Town of LaValle until 1949 when they moved to their present residence on North Pine street. She had been a member of St. John's Lutheran church since her marriage and had been a member of the St. John's Ladies Aid for over 35 years. Death came suddenly while in attendance at the St. John's Lutheran church 75th anniversary service, August 23, 1953. Funeral services were held August 6 from St. John's Lutheran church, with the burial in St. John's cemetery. Mrs. Behn is survived by her husband Otto and her daughter, Mrs. Edith Anderson of Wisconsin Dells. Taken from the Reedsburg Paper of September 3, 1953.
 

Behn, Herman C. Herman C. Behn, 75, of 318 LaValle Street, Reedsburg died at his home. He was born April 2, 1904 to Carl and Caroline (nee Burmeister) Behn in the Town of Reedsburg. He was a retired farmer and lifelong resident of the area, a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Loganville, member of the Reedsburg Senior Citizens and the Reedsburg Historical Society. Behn is survived by one brother, August, of Hayward; and one sister, Mrs. Elsie Schuette of Reedsburg; several nieces and nephews. Services were held Tuesday, March 4, 1980 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Loganville with Rev. George Gutzmann officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Loganville with arrangements made by Hammer Funeral Home. Taken from the Reedsburg Paper of March 1980.
 

Behn, Mrs. Mrs. Behn, an old and respected citizen of this neighborhood, died last Sunday forenoon while on the road home from her daughter's Mrs. Toeder, where she had been to spend an hour. When near her home, which is about twenty rods from her daughter's she was taken with a sinking spell and signaled for her daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Toeder ran to her assistance but she died before they could get her to the house. The funeral is held at 1 o'clock this afternoon and 2 o'clock at the St. Peter's Lutheran church in Reedsburg. The relatives have the sympathy of their friends. Behn, August H. A former Reedsburg man, August H. Behn died Friday, Nov. 14, 1980 in a hospital at Hayward. Oldest of a family of ten children, his parents were Carl and Caroline (nee Burmester) Behn of the town of Reedsburg. He celebrated his 100th birthday, Sept. 9, 1980. His wife Aura (Hineman) Behn preceded him in death in 1966. Survivors included three daughters,. Mrs. Lloyd (Wilma) Fullington, Mrs. John (Mary) Kludt and Mrs. Cloyd (Agnes) Peterson, all of Hayward, a sister, Mrs. Elsie Schuette, Reedsburg, eleven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Behn, Louisa H. (Hesse) Mrs. Louisa H. Behn, 88, of R.F.D. 2, Reedsburg died Thursday, October 7 at the Sauk County Health Care Center. She was born July 22, 1888 in Madison to August and Louise Hesse and was married on July 15, 1919 to William H. Behn in Madison. Mr. Behn preceded her in death on November 22, 1976. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Senior Fellowship of St. John's until her confinement. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Esther Behn of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Walter of R.F.D. 2, Reedsburg; and four grandsons. Services were held Saturday, October 9 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Reverend James F. Behrens officiating. Burial was at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Reedsburg with arrangements made by Hammer Funeral Home. Taken from the Reedsburg Paper of October 1976.
 

Behn, William Arthur. William Arthur Behn, 78, of Loganville, died on Thursday, May 13, 1982 at the Reedsburg Memorial hospital. He was born March 16, 1904 in Reedsburg Township to William and Anna (nee Rusch) Behn, and was a carpenter in the Loganville area. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran church of Loganville, and married Hilma Thies on June 16, 1936 in Reedsburg in the home of her parents. Survivors include his wife, Hilma, Loganville; two sons, Carl, Route 1, Reedsburg, and William A., Route 1, Reedsburg; three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Helen) Kroeger, Route 1, Rock Springs, Mrs. Roy Schroeder, Route 1, Loganville, Mrs. David (Carol) Baumgarten, Route 1, Prairie du Sac; 14 grandchildren. Behn, Caroline Augusta Elizabeth. Caroline Augusta Elizabeth Behn (nee Burmester) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burmester, was born on December 17, 1861, in the town of Westfield. On November 30, 1879, she was married to Carl Behn of the town of Reedsburg, by Rev. Geo. Woerth, at Loganville. They immediately settled on the farm near the county farm which has been her home for over 52 years. This union was blessed with ten children, five sons and five daughters, three daughters dying in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Alma Schuette passed away about 10 years ago. In the passing of Mrs. Behn, not only her immediate family and relatives but a host of friends and neighbors have lost a loved one. Her aim in life was to be a devoted wife and mother and a true christian. Surviving are her husband, five sons, August of Hayward, Otto and Ernest of Reedsburg, William of Narrows Prairie; one daughter, Mrs. Walter Schuette of near LaValle, and Herman at home; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry and William Burmester of Reedsburg, also a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 1, at St. Peter's Lutheran church at Loganville, conducted by Rev. F. Schalkhauser. Behn, Frieda, Miss. Miss Frieda Behn died at her home in the town of Reedsburg on June 12, 1942. She was 59 years of age. She was born on the 26th day of March 1883 and baptized and confirmed in the St. Peter's Lutheran church at Loganville. She is survived by 1 brother, William Behn and wife, a nephew, Arthur Behn and wife, 2 grandnieces and many cousins. The funeral was held on Sunday, June 14, 1942. Behn, Katherine. Mrs. Katherine Behn breathed her last. Mrs. Behn was born in Hamersdorf, Hanover, Germany, on the 6th day of June, 1859. Her parents were Christoph Mueller and his wife Katherine nee Kohrs. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the land of her birth. In 1884 the deceased together with her parents left her homeland and came to this country settling at once in Reedsburg after their arrival. On October 26, 1885, she was joined in holy wedlock to Mr. George Behn, the ceremony being performed in our church by the Rev. August Rohrlack. During the first four years of their married life they rented a farm in the vicinity of Reedsburg, but in 1889 purchased the present farm which has been the home of departed sister for 56 years. Their union was blessed with four children, two of whom died in infancy. On September 3, 1935, after nearly fifty years of wedded life, Mr. Behn was suddenly taken hence by death. Mrs. Behn continued to live with her son and daughter-in-law, where she was given loving and tender care in her old age, particularly during the last year. She breathed her last on June 16 having reached the age of 86 years and 10 days. She is survived by one son, one daughter, and two grandchildren. Behn, Ludwig. Henry Ludwig Behn died Friday, May 8, 1908, at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 1 day. He was born in Bevensen, Germany and came to this country when seventeen years of age. He lived twelve years in Madison and then came to Reedsburg where he engaged for a time in the mercantile trade and aside from a few years as a merchant in Loganville, this has since been his home. At the time of his death he held the office of justice of the peace having been elected several years ago. In 1881 he was married to Miss Dora Schuette and to them were born three children, one son Edmund, and two daughters, Eva and Hulda are at home with their mother. Four sisters also survive. One lives in Germany, Mrs. Christina Meyer in Minneapolis, Mrs. Reineke in Wonewoc and Mrs. Krug in Reedsburg. Six months ago he had an attack of the grip from which he never fully recovered. The funeral was held Monday from St. Peter's Lutheran church conducted by the pastor Rev. Aug. Rohrlack.
 

Behn, Dora. Funeral services for Mrs. Dora Behn who passed away at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frank Hahn, St. Paul, on February 7, 1935 were held from St. Peter's Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon. The remains had been brought to the home of her brother, Fred Schuette last Friday. Mrs. Behn, who lived in this community nearly all her life, is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hahn and Mrs. John Anderson, Chicago; one son, Edmund Behn, Chippewa Falls; four grandchildren; one brother, Fred and one sister, Mrs. Henry C. Struck, both of this city. Mr. Behn preceded her in death a number of years ago. Margaret Dora Schuette was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Schuette on March 30, 1858 at Hohenbaenstorf, Hanover, Germany. When she was two years of age she came to this country with her parents and they settled on the former Henry Schuette farm, southeast of this city. She was confirmed in the Westfield Lutheran church by Rev. Winter. On July 31, 1881 she was united in marriage with Henry S. Behn, by the Rev. August Rohrlock. Most of her life from then on was spent in this city, where she was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran church. For the past ten years she made her home with her daughter in St. Paul and the year previous to going there, she resided with her son, Edmund "Bud" at Chippewa Falls.
 

Behn, Albert. Albert Behn, 50, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Behn who reside on a farm south of Reedsburg met a very tragic death, Tuesday, when he was attacked and killed by a bull. Mr. Behn, who was an inmate of the Richland County Asylum, was sent out in the field to get the bull, which had been placed there when the storm had destroyed the shed in which it was kept. When Mr. Behn failed to return for the evening meal, they found him dead in the field. Funeral services will be in St. John' Lutheran church this afternoon. He leaves to mourn besides his parents, a sister, Frieda and a brother, William. Taken from the Reedsburg Times of 7-26-1929.
 

Behn, Otto. Otto Behn, 97, died September 19, 1979 at the Reedsburg Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Behn was born March 17, 1882 in the Reedsburg Township to Carl and Carolyn (nee Burmeister) Behn. A retired miller from the Reedsburg Equity Warehouse, he was a member of St. John's Lutheran church and served on the Finance Committee when the present building was constructed. He was the last member of this committee. Behn is survived by two brothers, Herman of Reedsburg and August of Hayward; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Schuette of Reedsburg; one grandson, James Anderson of Waunakee; several nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 22 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Reedsburg with Rev. Charles J. Wilson officiating. Behnke, Louis. Louis Behnke, a farmer in the Town of Winfield, passed away suddenly last Saturday, April 28, 1934. Although not in the best of health, death came almost without warning to this well known man. Mr. Behnke reached the age of 56 years. He had been ill but a week, and three days before his death was taken to the Municipal hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 2 from St. Peters. Mr. Behnke had been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. The deceased is survived by his widow; mother, Mrs. Wm. Behnke; two brothers, Henry, Shelly, Minnesota and Martin, Park Ridge, Illinois; one sister, Mrs. Emil R. H. Schultz of Reedsburg. Jurgen Henry Louis Behnke was born March 28, 1878 in the town of Excelsior, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Behnke. He grew to manhood on the family farm and on November 28, 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Jacobs. They established their home on the farm in Winfield and made a host of friends who mourn the passing of Mr. Behnke.
 

Behnke, Walter. Walter Behnke, 40, died Friday, March 2, 1928 and the funeral was held from the home of his sister, Mrs. Louis Schultz, west of the city, conducted by Rev. Carl Schinnerer of St. Peter's Lutheran church. He had been an invalid for many years. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Wm. Behnke, one sister, Mrs. Louis Schultz and three brothers, Louis, Henry and Martin. The father died some years ago.
Behnke, Christian Ludwig. Christian Ludwig Behnke was born in Drogennotdorf, Hanover, Germany on January 17, 1818 and died May 5, 1901. He was married in 1843 to Dorothea Elisabeth Williams. They came to America in 1867 and soon bought a farm near Ableman. His wife died about 27 years ago. He was buried in the Ableman cemetery.
Behnke, Reinhold. Reinhold Behnke, 28, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Henry Behnke, at Ableman, Saturday, July 25, 1925. He was born in the town of Excelsior, March 5, 1897. He grew up on the home farm, until five years ago, when the family moved to Ableman. He was of a quiet disposition, working at various places, and was highly esteemed by all with whom he came into contact. He took sick December 28 and came home, where he was tenderly cared for by his mother and where all posible medical aid was rendered. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the home and from the Lutheran church, the Rev. F. P. Popp officiating and conducting the singing by the choir. The church was crowded by relatives and friends to pay a final tribute to the deceased. Many beautiful flowers and a united feeling of deep regret show the sorrow of the many who attended. Mr. Behnke had been ill for several months. Besides his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Walter and Arthur, and two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Holtz, Jr., and Mrs. Hugo Schroeder. Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery.
 

Beich, Duane J. Duane J. Beich of Merrimac died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital. He was 65. Mr. Beich was born in Columbia County on Oct. 3, 1936, the son of the late Walter and Vera (McLean) Beich. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Korea from 1954 to 1957. He was employed by Oscar Mayer for 34 years, retiring in 1995. Mr. Beich loved hunting, fishing, golf and card playing, and was a member of the Merrimac Conservation Club. He is survived by three daughters, Lee Ann McWane of Baraboo, Janene (Thomas) Clark of Baraboo, and Brandie Beich of Verona; three grandchildren, Tyler, Brittney and Zachary Clark; three brothers, Derryll (Vanyce) Beich of Monona, Dale (Mary Ellen) Beich of Sauk City, and Dennis (Sheri) Beich of Merrimac; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Darin. A memorial service was March 28 at Gnewikow-Hooverson Funeral Home, Pastor Anita Genrich officiating.
 

Beier, Frank Jr. Frank Jr. Beier was born April 25, 1862 in the town of Red Wood, New York. In early boyhood he came with his parents to Cazenovia where he grew to manhood. On July 23, 1890 he was married to Nellie Robinson of LaValle. They then moved to South Dakota they resided for a number of years. To this union were born six children. They returned to the Cazenovia community where he engaged in farmed. Mr. Beier retired from farming twenty-nine years ago and he and his wife moved to Valton where the spent the reminder of his life. He faithfully attended the Friends Church in Valton until failing health prevented. He passed away May 8, 1958, in the Reedsburg hospital at the age of ninety-six years. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, and two sisters, a son-in-law, Herbert Mortimer, and a son, Lee. Surviving Mr. Beier are his wife Nellie, a daughter, Florence Mortimer of Valton; a son, Vern and wife, Okla, of Valton; a son, Frank and wife, Ida of Cazenovia; a son, Bert and wife, Ella, of Hillsboro; a daughter, Iva and husband, Archie Shore of Valton; and a daughter-in-law, Eleanor Beier of Philadelphia, PA.; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday May 11, in the Valton Friends Church with Rev. Winifred Eastman officiating, assisted by Rev. Norma Henderson and Rev. Royal Bailie. Burial was in the Valton cemetery. Pallbearers were Mr. Beier’s seven grandsons, Duane Beier, Donavon Shore, Dean Beier, Dale Mortimer, and Lawrence, George and Harold Beier.
 

Bell, Lorraine S. Lorraine S. Bell, age 87 of North Freedom, passed away on Sunday morning, August 26, 2001, at St. Clare Hospital. Lorraine, the daughter of Herman and Susanna (Repka) Kopf, was born on May 3, 1914 in Ableman, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage to James Bell on September 11, 1933 in Ableman. Lorraine and Jim had farmed in the Township of Freedom for many years. Shortly after his death Lorraine retired from farming and moved into North Freedom. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North Freedom. Lorraine loved gardening, roses, baking, needle work, reading, and family gatherings. She is survived by 11 children: Robert (Colleen) of Baraboo, Lester (Heidi) of Blaine, MN, Edith (Harley) Wiese of Loganville, James (Carolyn) of Reedsburg, Dennis (Betty) of Rock Springs, William (Mary) of Barron, WI, Ronald (Bonnie) of Rock Springs, Donald (Sandy) of Baraboo, John (Sue) of Rock Springs, Sue (Jamey) Funk of Reedsburg, Donna (Doug) Dyke of Reedsburg; 32 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Raymond (Josephine) Kopf of Baraboo; 2 sisters, Esther Gavin of Reedsburg and Adeline Lange of North Freedom; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, James; one son, Theodore; and two brothers, Harold and Lawrence Kopf. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2001, at11:00 A.M. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North Freedom with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom. Bellows, Henry “Hank” A. Henry "Hank" N. Bellows, age 87, of Lake Delton, Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2001, at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo. He was born in Sparta, Wisconsin on February 21, 1914, the son of Rollo and Iva (Sorg) Bellows. He married Joanne Moseler on December 31, 1970 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. He had worked for Capener Motors for many years and later he was a road construction company foreman, retiring in 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Audrey Nieman, Leta Bellows, and Juane Lazier. He is survived by his wife, Joanne of Lake Delton; his children, Ron Pagel of Madison, Scarlett (Robert) Parker of Pewaukee, Bonny Parsons of Greenfield, and Tim Bruer of Madison; two grandchildren, Vaughnn Parker and Shana Parker; his sister, Rosemary Berry of Reedsburg; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at Rago Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend David Gilmore officiating. Bender, Dorothy Mae. Dorothy Mae Bender, age 77, of Wisconsin Dells, died on Sunday, April 7, 2002 at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center. She was born on September 30, 1924 in Sauk County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Cornelius and Effie (Rhinehart) Holton. She was a member of the Dells-Delton United Methodist Church. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Art Hawalleck, Frank Bender and Henry Henricksen; her brothers, Edward and Clarence Holton; her sisters, Aggie, Phyllis, Margaret and Unabelle. She is survived by her children, Lela (Wally) Kozlowski of Wisconsin Dells, Reva (Rich) Fendler Jensen of Lake Delton, Sylvia (Blaire) Weidling of Wisconsin Dells, Shirley (Byron Walter) Smith of Mauston; Laurie (Dave Penzkover) Peasall of Lake Delton, Buddy (Mary Schwark) Bender of Elroy, Sandra (Jerry) Bender-Hohl of Baraboo, Dan (Laurie) Bender of Elroy; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Hennessey of Baraboo; special nieces, Anita Copper and Pat Holton of Wisconsin Dells; special friends, Arlene Marslander of Lake Delton and Dan Smith of Wisconsin Dells; many nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Bergman, Bertilla C. Bertilla C. Bergman, age 91, of Plain, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at the Pines Assisted Living in Prairie du Sac. She was born on June 2, 1912, in Franklin township, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Schwartz) Hetzel. She was married on Sept. 1, 1936, to George Bergman. Bertilla was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, the Catholic Knights and cooked at St. Luke's Catholic School for 37 years. Survivors include five children, Rita (George) Brey of Plain, Bill (Gerri) Bergman of Plain, Mark (Marian) Bergman of Reedsburg, Marie (Ron) Loether of Sauk City, and Paul (Sharon) Bergman of Pinedale, Ariz.; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a sister, Thecla Moseman of Sauk City; and a sister-in-law, Mary Hetzel of Plain; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bergman in 1945; two sons, Rudolph in 1962; and Robert in 1994; two grandchildren, Timothy Brey and Kathleen Thomas Brey; four brothers, Albert, Alois, Mark and John Hetzel; and four sisters, Anna Lins, Christina Hetzel, Rose Lins and Agatha Hetzel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. at ST. LUKE'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Plain. Father Mike Resop will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Berning, Elsie M. Elsie M. Berning, age 59, of Baraboo, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare in Madison. She was born on Oct. 12, 1944, in Reedsburg, to Reinhard and Emma (Meyer) Meyer. Elsie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Reedsburg, and a former Ladies Aid member. Elsie enjoyed watching football, basketball and NASCAR racing. She also enjoyed the company of her many friends, family and extended family. Her life was dedicated to the happiness of her sons, family and friends. Through great pain, Elsie reached out and touched a special spot in all of those she met. She was a kind, loving and generous woman, who through all of her suffering managed to smile and share a good word with everyone with whom she spoke. She was an inspiration to many people because of the grace and dignity with which she dealt with the numerous obstacles that were put upon her. Through her faith and trust in God, she taught us that each day was a gift to embrace. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Katie Hagen, Elsie's "special friend and caregiver until the end", and to the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare. She is survived by her sons, Michael (Ellen) Berning of Sun Prairie, and Brian (Vicki) Berning of LaValle; sisters, Pearl Wilburn of Pikeville, Tenn., and Avonda Giese of Baraboo; brothers, Norbert (Lorraine) Meyer of Madison, Merlin (Polly) Meyer of Reedsburg, and Gerald Meyer of Baraboo; nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth (Lawrence) Clark and Adeline (Don) Ewing; brother-in-law, William Giese; and nephew, David Clark. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH in Reedsburg, with Pastor Tod Vertz officiating. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery in Rock Springs. Friends may call on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Bessert, Arlene Ann. Arlene Ann Bessert, 71, Reedsburg, passed away at her winter home in Edinburg, Texas on Jan. 30, 2004. She was born July 30, 1932, to Frieda and Gerhardt Riemer of Rantoul. She married her teenage love Ronald K. Bessert. They were married at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Rantoul on Aug. 16, 1952. Arlene was employed at the Sauk County Health Care Center from 1970 until she retired as the volunteer coordinator in 1994. Arlene will be fondly remembered for her gracious hospitality, wonderful cooking and love of flowers. She will certainly be missed by many friends, family and all of those who called her "Ma B." She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Ron Bessert, Reedsburg; children, Loree Bessert, Lewisville, Texas, Robert (Sammi) Bessert DVM, Loma, Colo., and MariRuth RN (Bill) Robertson, Lewisville, Texas. She also leaves behind three wonderful grandchildren, Samantha Heiking, Lauren Robertson and Kade Bessert. Arlene will join her oldest son, Alan, who preceded her in death 14 years ago. Services for Arlene A. Bessert will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Reedsburg. Friends may call on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at St. Peter's Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church. The Farber Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Beth, John Carl Frederich. John Carl Frederich Beth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Beth, was born in Grohs Rakow, Germany, on Aug. 14, 1857. He passed away on Dec. 4, 1944 at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 20 days. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Christian faith in Kirchbagkensdorf in 1871. He was married to Johanna Leverence on Oct. 20, 1882. In the year of 1892 the family immigrated to America and settled in Ableman. This union was blessed with six children. One son died in infancy while they were still in Germany. One daughter, Mrs. Anna Beth, passed away on July 30, 1922. The first few years he labored at the quarry and later settled on a farm in the town of Excelsior. In the year of 1918 he retired from farm life and lived in the village of Ableman. After his wife passed away in 1933 he made his home with his son, Ernest, and daughter, Frieda. Mr. and Mrs. Beth were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Oct. 22, 1932. During his entire years of life here, he was a faithful member of the Lutheran church in Ableman. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Frieda Wischman, Ernest, Carl and August Beth, all of the Town of Excelsior; ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, Wm. Beth of Elgin, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Holtz, of Dundee, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. John Dettman, Sr. of Ableman; Mrs. Charles Beth of Des Plaines, Ill.; and one brother-in-law, Aug Koeppen, of Lake Villa, Ill.; and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 7, at the home and at 2 o'clock at the St. John's Lutheran church, Ableman. The Rev. Phillip Lehman officiated. The pallbearers were five grandsons and one friend, namely, Awalt and Carl Beth, Elmer Wischman, Floyd Brooks, Vern Harrison and Richard Doro.

Bethscheider, Theresa Ann (Klaes). Theresa Anna Klaes was born in Honey Creek, Sauk County, Wisconsin June 13, 1860 and died at her home in Hebron, Nebraska, on April 7, 1945 at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 24 days. At the age of 19 years she came with her parents to Hebron which became her permanent home. She was united in marriage on June 8, 1886 to Andrew Bethscheider who preceded her in death April 13, 1926. To this union nine children were born: Lawrence, Margaret, Mary, Regina of Hebron; William of Berkley, Mich., Rudolph of Portland, Oregon and Henry of Oakland, CA and two who died in early infancy. Besides her children she leaves to mourn her departure, three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Cedarholm. Mrs. Josephine Stutz, Mrs. Wm. Schleif of Chester, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church Saturday morning at 9:30, Rev. C. J. Crowley officiating. Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were William Bethscheider, Berkley, Mich., Rudolph Bethscheider, of Portland, Oregon, Henry and La Vieve of Oakland, Cal., Mrs. Wm. Schleif and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Schleif of Chester. Mrs. Fred Zingg of Platte Center, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shipman and Evvely of Beatrice and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Engel and Betty Jo of Wymore.

 Betscheider, Amelia Julia Frieda. Mrs. Amelia Julia Frieda Simon Betscheider died at her home in Honey Creek Monday evening, February 21, 1927, aged 88 years, five months and 27 days. Mrs. Betscheider was sick for about a year, although only confined to her bed for six weeks. Old age was the cause of her death. The deceased was born in Stettin, near Berlin, Germany, August 25, 1838. She was united in marriage to Heinrich Kuhnau in the country of her birth. Her first husband died in Germany, and in 1873 she came to America with her children. On June 19 of the same year she came to Sauk City, where she resided until 1874 when she was united in marriage with Jacob Betscheider of Honey Creek. They made their home on a farm in that town and she resided there until her death. Mr. Betscheider died 31 years ago. This union was blessed with three children who survive – Mrs. Frank Jessie of Sumpter and John and Albert at home. The children of her first marriage are Carl Kuhnau of Honey Creek, Paul Kuhnau of Elroy and Gust Kuhnau, who preceded his mother in death on November 7, 1921. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Denzer Friday forenoon. Father Schauenberg of Sauk City officiating. The pallbearers were John and Gottlieb Wawrock, Rudolph Leidig, Geo. Koltz, George Mockler and Casper Roeser. Those from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kuhnau of Elroy; Mrs. Ferdinand Preis of Eyota, Minn. And Mrs. Carl Preis of Rochester, Minnesota. Sympathy is extended the bereaved.
 

Bible, Virginia J. Virginia J. Bible, age 71 of Baraboo, died Sunday, July 20, 2003 at St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo, after a brief and courageous battle against cancer and a stroke. She was born March 4, 1932 and grew up in the Sauk Prairie area. She was the daughter of Margaret (Paepke) Lintl and Richard Seitz. On August 22, 1951 she married Byron Bible of Baraboo and they continued to be together until his death in 1998. Their marriage was blessed with the addition of a daughter, Amy Jo. Virginia (or Virg as many knew her) was a very active person. During her lifetime she worked at Schultz's Dime Store, Industrial Coils, and for the past 30+ years at Kmart of Baraboo. She enjoyed working with the public as well as working at home in her yard, with her flowers, and watching the Green Bay Packers. She was also an active volunteer with St. Clare Meadows Care Center and the Parkway Wesleyan Church until her illness. She is survived by her daughter: Amy Jo of Baraboo, 2 brothers: Arthur (Donna) Seitz of Sauk City, Edward Seitz of Pontiac, MI, 2 sisters, Dorothy (John) Sorg of Prairie du Sac, Lola (Soya) Sagami of Mazomanie, a half-brother: Steve (Linda) Lintl of Prairie du Sac, in-laws: Dorothy (Ken) Luetkens of Baraboo, Dilver (Shirley) Bible of Madison, Judy Bible of Stoughton, Ed Bible of Rockford, IL, and Arbutus Clark of Madison. Additional relatives and many great friends further survive her. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Byron, two nephews, three sisters-in-law, and four brothers-in-law. Funeral services for Virginia J. Bible will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at the Brown Funeral Home, 401 Madison Ave., Baraboo with Pastor Thomas Dunbar officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 from 6-8 p.m., at the Brown Funeral Home, and 1 hour before the services on Thursday. Bisch, Francis. January 1948 Last Rites of Mrs. Bisch The funeral of Mrs. Joseph Bisch was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Evangelical United Brethren church, the Rev John Koch officiating. Hymns were sung by Clinton W. Platt and Mrs. Arthur Lange was at the organ. Burial was made in Walnut Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were Irvin and Philip Bender, Harold Thompson, Lee Cleveland, Stanley Premo and Herman Harmel. Attending the services from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Rex Griep and children, Maywood, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Scoon and children, Reedsburg, Mrs. Olga Bisch, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Frank Feltz, Wauwatosa. 

Bishop, Mrs. Edward. Dec. 1949 Mrs. Edward Bishop passed away last evening at St. Mary’s Ringling hospital where she had been for the past week. Her husband, who preceded her in death, had been an official with Armour & Co., Chicago, until his retirement. She had resided in Baraboo, making her home in the Johnson apartments on Fourth avenue, since her husband’s death some years ago. She is survived by two nieces, the Misses Josephine and Hazel Hollenbeck, of this city.
Bittrich, Ernest L. Baraboo News Thursday, Nov 6, 1958 Ernest L. Bittrich, 64, a lifelong resident of the Town of Baraboo passed away this morning at Madison Methodist Hospital, Madison. He had been in ill health for some time. Survivors include his wife, Mary and daughter Darlene (C.E.) Lychberg, Madison and brother Henry Bittrich of Baraboo and 1 grandson. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday at St John's Lutheran Church, Baraboo. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson Funeral home Friday evening from 7 to 9. Mr. Bittrich will be taken to the church at 12 pm Saturday where friends may call until time of services. Memorials may be made to the church.

Bittrich, Martha. Thurs, March 29, 1973 Martha Bittrich, 83, died Friday, March 23, 1973, in the Snyder Nursing Home, Reedsburg, Wisconsin after a long illness. The former Martha Retzlaff was born in Sauk County and was married to Henry Eschenbach in 1913. He died in 1954. She married Paul Bittrich in 1958. He died in 1971. She was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church and the Ladies Aid. Surviving are son Henry Eschenbach of Mauston; 4 sisters Mrs Eva Rowe of 608 Chapman St, Madison; Mrs. Caroline Wiseman of Rock Springs & Mrs. Louise Krueger and Mrs. Mayme Brimmer of Reedsburg. The funeral was held Tuesday in the Rock Springs Baptist Church. Arrangements were made by the Gant Funeral Home with burial in Pine Hill cemetery.

Bittrich, Marie. Monday, Oct 30, 1961 Mrs Ernest, Marie, Bittrich, 64, a lifelong area resident, died Friday at a Madison hospital after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Tuesday at St John's Lutheran church, Baraboo, with Pastor E. Toepel officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. She was a past president of the American Legion auxiliary, and served on the Skillet Creek School board for 25 years. Surviving are a daughter Mrs C. E. Lyckberg of Madison; three sisters Mrs George Schneider & Mrs Ernest Potratz both of Baraboo & Mrs Howard Bronson of Portage; a brother Carl Dunse of Baraboo and 2 grandchildren. Bittrich, Robert. The Evening News (WI) Sat, March 21, 1908 Sad demise of Robert Bittrich who went from home for his health. Relatives of Robert Bittrich received a message today stating that he died last night at East Las Vegas, New Mexico, to which place he went some days ago for his health. He was troubled with hemorrhage in connection with consumption and it is supposed that a sudden attack caused his demise. He was 29 years old and has always resided near Baraboo. His brother, Otto, went with him and will return with the remains.
 

Bittrich, Lydia. Baraboo News Republic Mon Feb 27, 1961 Mrs. Lydia Bittrich, 70, North Freedon, passed away Sunday afternoon at St. Mary's Ringling Hospital after a brief illness. The widow of Paul W. Bittrich, who had farmed for 46 years in the town of Freedom. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs Virgil Meyer, a grandson, a brother Harold Platt, two sisters Mrs Julius Fenske & Mrs. Oliver Clement all of Baraboo, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs Bittrich will be held on Wed afternoon at 2 at the Scheible Funeral Home with Reverend M. E. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm.
 

Bittrich, Albertine. Baraboo News Republic (WI) Friday, Dec 1, 1933 Ableman- Mrs Albertine Bittrich of Ableman, aged 90 years, passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs Cleon Fleming, Nov 29, after a long illness due to old age. Eight children survive Mrs Bittrich, 3 of them in Germany. They are Herman, Mrs. Albert Scheils & Mrs. Otto Wendt. The 5 who survived her in this country are Otto of Forth Atkinson, Max of Beloit, Mrs. Fred Dreifke, Mrs. Fleming and Paul all of Ableman. Funeral services will be held at the Fleming home, south of the village, at 1:30 Sunday afternoon and at 2 pm at the Ableman Lutheran Church. The Reverend P. Lehman will officiate and burial will be the Ableman Cemetery.
 

Bittrich, Julia. The Beloit Daily News (WI) Tues, Feb 3, 1959 Mrs. Julia Bittrich, 78, of 1102 Church St, died at 8:55 a.m. today at her home. She had been confined to bed since suffering a fractured hip in April 1957. Mrs. Bittrich the former Julia Moldenhauer was born Oct. 20, 1880 in Hamburg Germany the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Moldenhauer. She came to the United States in 1888 and was married to Fred Bittrich on June 1, 1905 in Rock Springs, Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Bittrich came to Beloit in 1909. Mr. Bittrich died in 1920. Mrs. Bittrich was a charter member of the Ladies Aid society of the Rock Springs Lutheran Church. She was a member to St. John's Lutheran Church in Beloit and an honorary member of the Church Ladies Aid Society. Survivors include two daughters Avis and Esther at home, and several nieces and nephews. Five sisters and brothers preceded her. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Schoenfeld Funeral Home, 1837 Park Ave. Rev. R. G. Friedrichs officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home between 7 to 9 Wednesday.
 

Bittrich, Mrs. Paul. Mrs. Paul Bittrich, 72, Rock Springs, wife of a retired hardware dealer here, died Monday morning, August 12, 1957 in a Baraboo hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. John's Lutheran Church here. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Anna Breitzke, 123 E. Wilson St., Madison. Also surviving are her husband; a brother, William J. Dwars, Baraboo; and another sister, Mrs. William Klitzke, Reedsburg. Mrs. Bittrich was born in Rock Springs. Friends may call from this afternoon to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Gant funeral home , Reedsburg.

Bittrich, Zella May. Mrs. Zella May (Henry) Bittrich, age 82 of 126 Parkview Terrace, Marshfield, died at the Marshfield Living Center at 4 p.m. Friday, May 27, 1988 of a massive coronary. Funeral servies were held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 30, at the Hansen Funeral Home, Marshfield. Burial was in Hillside Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield. Rev. Mark Krueger of Christ Lutheran Church, Marshfield, officiated. Born May 7, 1906 in Merrimac, she was the daughter of George C. and Otilia Amelia (Koerth) Kasdorf. She was married to Henry R. Bittrich on June 14, 1927 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Baraboo. She received her education in the Baraboo schools. She lived and worked in Baraboo as a bookkeeper and office manager for Herbergers Co. and the Scott-Burr Corp. She retired and they moved in 1963 to Fern Park, Florida. In 1979 they moved to Marshfield to live near their son. She was a former president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Baraboo, and a grand oracle of the Royal Neighbors of America. She was a member and former president of St. John's Ladies Aid Society, Baraboo. She is survived by her husband; one son, John Bittrich of Marshfield; three grandchildren; one brother, Lyle L. Kasdorf of Whittier, California; and one sister, Hazel Hansen of Whittier, California. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. Taken from the Baraboo News Republic.

Bittrich, Paul F. The Reedsburg Times Press (WI) Thursday, October 21, 1971 Paul F. Bittrich, 87, Rock Springs oldest resident, died Thursday, October 14, 1971 at the Reedsburg Memorial hospital after a long illness. He was born on May 27, 1884 in Germany and came to the United States when he was nine. He operated a hardware store in Rock Springs. Survivors include his wife, the former Martha Retzlaff, and stepson Henry Eschenbach of Mauston. Funeral services, arranged by Gant Funeral Home, were held at 1:30 pm Sunday, October 17 by Rev. Norman Miller. Burial was at St. John's cemetery in Rock Springs.
Bjornsen, Martin John. Martin John Bjornsen, age 84, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at St. Clare Meadows Care Center, following a long illness. Martin was born in Baraboo on March 26, 1918, son of Hans and Augusta (Dettmann) Bjornsen. He married Janet Church on July 15, 1950. He was educated in the Baraboo Schools and graduated from Baraboo High School with the Class of 1937. Martin was a master cabinetmaker, an avocation he pursued all his life. He served 27 years as a Baraboo police officer. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion where he saw duty in the Philippine Islands. Martin was particularly proud of his Norwegian heritage and was a charter member of Vakkertland Lodge, Sons of Norway, Wisconsin Dells. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Baraboo, the Sauk County Law Enforcement Association, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association and Baraboo Masonic Lodge #34. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Viola M. Schilling and Olga Prothero. Survivors include his wife, Janet of Baraboo; his son, Eric (Susan) Bjornsen of Rochester, Minn.; his daughter, Karen (Jim) Sanner of Baraboo; two grandchildren, Jamie and Eric Sanner; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Gilmore officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Interment will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The Rago Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Black, Willis W. On Sunday afternoon, March 6, 1994, Willis W. Black, 88, formerly of 1018 Elm Street, Beloit, died in Premier Care after a long illness. In the winter of 1906 on January 11, he was born in Rock Springs on the family farm to William Ernest and Martha Lange Black. He married Neva Janet Rindy on February 20, 1937, in the home of Neva's sister, Gladys Fast. She predeceased him on July 6, 1964. Willis was a graduate of Reedsburg High School. He was employed as secretary/treasurer for Beloit Building and Loan, and later devoted himself to selling real estate. Willis was an active member of First Baptist Church, the church choir director for many years, served on various boards and committees of the church, and the Roger Williams Society. He was a member of the Beloit Board of Realtors, and a 50-year member of Morning Star Lodge No. 10 F. & A.M. He was a past member of the Acacia Chorus of the Masonic Temple. Music was a great part of his life, and was an accomplished soloist and pianist in his earlier years. He served the First Baptist Church, the Second Congregational Church, and the First Presbyterian Church as choir director. Survivors include his sister, Nellie V. Black of Beloit; his daughter, Judith (Al) Huffman of Beloit; two sons, David L. (DeeDee) Black and Richard W. (Cynthia) Black, both of Rockford, IL; eight grandchidlren: Tamara (Ron) Mixon, Timothy (Robin) Huffman, Ty Huffman, Lisa (Kevin) Rudy, Amy (Mark) Steward, Greg Black, Chad (Jennifer) Black, and Kirsten Gleasman; 10 great-grandchildren: Shannon, Jamie and Ron Mixon, Benjamin, Brianna, Neva-Marie and Timothy Huffman, Kenneth and Lindsay Rudy, Kori Black, Grant and Max Schubert; two sisters-in-law, Helen (Evan) Black, and Augusta (Reuben) Black, both of Reedsburg; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that he and his family drew strength from and will always remember their thoughtfulness. He was predeceased by his parents; two infant brothers; and three brothers, Ernest, Evan and Reuben Black. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 10, 1994 in First Baptist church with Dr. Thomas Petree officiating. Luncheon and fellowship will follow the sevice at the church. Burial will be held in Shirland Cemetery, Shirland, IL. Friends call from 6-8 p.m., at the Daley-Murphy-Wisch and Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit. Black, Helen M. Helen M. Black, age 93, of Reedsburg, died Sunday morning, November 25, 2001 in the Edward Snyder Nursing Home. She was born on February 28, 1908 in Galesville, the daughter of Harry and Erna (Dobbeck) Sturdevant. On January 8, 1929 she was married to R. Evan Black. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1961. Helen was a faithful member of the North Freedom Baptist Church. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with her flowers. She was also a devoted caregiver to many of her family and friends. Survivors include many nieces and nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Evan, she was preceded in death by a brother: Louis and a sister: Frances. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at the NORTH FREEDOM BAPTIST CHURCH in North Freedom with Rev. Mark Brandel officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Memorials to the North Freedom Baptist Church would b appreciated. The family would like to thank Mary Florence Weitzel for her special friendship and also the staff of the Edward Snyder Nursing home for the genuine care and concern shown to Helen. Block, Theodore Paul. Theodore Paul Block was born in Ableman, Wis., on August 8, 1914, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Block. He had been failing in health since August, and went to bed on Feb 15. On April 13, he was taken to the Wisconsin General hospital, where all medical aid available, was given him but the Lord had other plans for him. On Monday afternoon, April 19, 1937 he went to be with the One in Whom he put all his faith and trust. Surviving him are his parents, and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Bernien of Reedsburg, Mrs. William Schulze of North Freedom, and Marie, at home. He had worked at carpentry with his father before his death. He was a member of the Ableman Baptist church. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, April 22 at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church with Rev. H. Vreeland of Baraboo officiating. Rev. Vreeland brought a comforting and hopeful message taken from Revelation, 22 Chapter. Two hymns, "God's Way is the Best Way", and "I'm Going Home", were sung by a male quartette consisting of Reuben Black, Evan Black, Herman Jahnke and Max Pawlisch. Pallbearers were close friends of the deceased, Fred Peters, Victor Rindfleisch, Reinold Schulze, Dean Weidman, Wilbur Hinz and Evan Holtz. Those who had charge of the flowers were Hazel Brockow, Elizabeth Schuck and Wilma Kopf. The large profusion of flowers showed the esteem in which he was held by all. Borland, Lucille I. Lucille I. Borland, 85, Reedsburg, died on Aug. 7, 2003, in St. Clare Meadows, Baraboo. She was born on June 10, 1918, in Winfield Township, Sauk County, the daughter of Walter A. and Elsie A. B. (Halvensleben) Kutz. She married Walter J. Fish on Nov. 30, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1981. She later married Corlis Borland on Feb.13, 1988. He also preceded her in death on April 17, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Norma Cottington. Lucille had been employed at Gerber Corporation for many years prior to her retirement. She had a fondness for traveling. She is survived by her children, John (Susan) Fish, Palmer, Alaska, and Steven (Karen) Fish, Pepin; a grandson, Gregory Fish, Stevens Point; her sisters, Noreane Prather, Reedsburg, and Gloria (Romey) Taylor, Mims, Fla.; nieces, nephew, along with other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Reedsburg, with Rev. Kevin Kohnke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, Aug. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Farber Funeral Home and again on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The family requests memorials of remembrance be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church. The Farber Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Bormann, Ivadell M. “Pandora”. Ivadell M. "Pandora" Bormann, age 82, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2003, at Maplewood Nursing Home, Sauk Prairie. She was born in Elroy on March 29, 1921, the daughter of Colonel and Edna (Klump) Senty. She graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1940. She later moved to Prairie du Sac. She was employed by Badger Ammunition Powder Plant, Marchowsky's, IGA, Sauk City, and Klien's, Baraboo. Pandora was united in marriage to Helmuth "Moody" Bormann in 1944. For 13 years, Pandora and Moody, out of genuine love and care, volunteered for the Sauk County Commission on Aging. Her endless energy and love was always with the family being first and foremost. She was a wonderful wife and the best Mommy. "We love you Mommy". Survivors include two sons, Ric of Sauk City (and Patti of Marblehead, Maine.), and Jon (Susan) of Van Alstyne, Texas; grandchildren, Jonnyka (Carmen) of Los Angeles, Calif., Jonathan (Jacqui) of Anchorage, Ala., Cheyney and Darrel of Marblehead, Maine; great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jessica, and Justin, all of Anchorage, Ala. She is Further survived by, Pandora's best friend for years, Linda Midthun, whose mother Shirley Barrows, Prairie du Sac, were life long, sister like friends; a special life friend, Mary Straka Johnson of Clinton Iowa. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Melvin; a daughter, Cheryl; and a son, Darrell; and her husband Moody. The family wishes to express the warmest, heart filled thank you to Dr. Maribeth Baker, Home Health United Care, nurse gals and staff, Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital Medical Team and Staff, and Maplewood caregivers and staff. Bothell, James. The Wisconsin State Journal Thursday, August 22, 1968 Baraboo- James Bothell died at a Madison hospital Wednesday afternoon of injuries suffered in a Wednesday morning traffic accident. Police said Bothell’s car ran off Hwy 12, south of Baraboo and stuck a tree. The Wisconsin State Journal Friday, August 23, 1968 Baraboo – The funeral for James L. Bothell, 25, who died Wednesday after an auto accident, will be at 2 pm Saturday in the United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 7-9 tonight at the Scheible Funeral Home. Mr. Bothell was a lifelong resident of Baraboo. He was a student at Madison Area Technical College and a member of the United Methodist Church. Surviving is a sister, Janet, 405 N Trop Dr.

Bradley, Mabel F. Mabel F. Bradley, 83, died Aug. 23 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro. She was born July 1, 1892 in Woodland Township to Ezra Harper Shore and Dora Stanley and married Harry Bradley in Valton Dec. 25, 1907. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ironton and the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She is survived by one son, Wallace, Sr. of Ironton; three daughters, Mrs. Hartwig Lange of Wonewoc, Mrs. Eunice Dooley of Reedsburg and Mrs. Francis Hanko of Cazenovia; two sisters, Mrs. Millie Mortimer of Wonewoc and Mrs. Jennie Mortimer of Eau Claire; 21 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ironton with the Rev. Benjamin J. Talledge officiating. Burial was in the Valton cemetery. Hammer Funeral Home was in charge.

Brandt, Agnes M. Agnes M. Brandt, 100, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at her home in Ironton Township. She was born on Nov. 24, 1908, in Ironton Township, the daughter of Eugene and Mary (Vosen) Gasser. On June 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to Maynard F. Brandt. This marriage was blessed with five children. Agnes lived at the same home for 71 years, where four of the five children were born. She was a member of the Sauk County Retired Teachers. She enjoyed her family, gardening, needlework and reading. Agnes was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Germantown. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maynard; brothers, George, Harold and Cyril Gasser; and sister, Mary, in infancy. She is survived by her children, James Brandt of LaValle, Lawrence (Joan) Brandt of Reedsburg, Mary (Larry) McGinley of Platteville, Joann (Jerry) Laufenberg of Morrison, Ill., and Vera (Snowball) Mihlbauer of LaValle; grandchildren, Craig Brandt, Jamie (Tonya) Brandt, Laurie (Scott) Ross, Teresa (Dave) Midthun, Julie (Dan) Gorecki, Nicole (Tom) Schaefer, Timothy L. Brockow, Margaret F. Margaret F. Brockow, age 103, of Reedsburg, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at the Sauk County Health Care Center. She was born on March 3, 1898 in Ableman, Wisconsin, the daughter of Carl and Hulda (Buelow) Steinhorst. She was married to Frederick W. Brockow on February 26, 1919, in Ableman. Frederick preceded her in death on January 19, 1981. Margaret was a lifetime member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rock Springs. She was a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary and a regular at the Ladies Circle. She loved playing cards and getting together with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frederick; son, Carl; daughter, Irene Boyles; grandson, Ronald Boyles; great-grandson, Timothy Mellentine; brothers, Harold Steinhorst, Charlie Steinhorst and twin brothers in infancy; sisters, Augusta Jaedike, Rose Veith, Huldina Basso-Lindenberg, Sophie Huebbe, Ida Kiefer and Marie Hanusa; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Brockow; sons-in-law, Al Boyles, Sy Mellentine and Earl Schluter. Broesch, William J. William J. Broesch, age 64, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, January 5, 2002, at St. Clare Hospital. He was born on January 12, 1937 in Portage, Wis., the son of Jacob and Caroline (Krinke) Broesch. He married Joyce Meyers on June 11, 1960 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo. Bill was a retired concrete construction worker and had worked for many years at Rural Masonry of Madison. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a private during the Berlin crisis in Germany. Bill was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Rick; and three brothers, Eugene, Roger and Donald. Bill was a brother, husband, father, and best friend to anyone who met him. He had an easy way of talking to people and was well liked by most that met him. He could often be seen sharing a beer and smoke, and carrying on a conversation with friends, new and old. He paid close attention to what was going on and loved to tell you about how bad the weather was going to be today or what had just happened on his police scanner. From the Depression, he learned to collect things that could later be used to repair something or simply had a bit more life in it. He loved his garage full of his collection and dreamed of one day owning a salvage yard full of "collectibles". Bill loved car racing, hunting, fishing, good conversation, repairing cars, and hard work. He will be sorely missed. Bill is survived by his wife, Joyce of Baraboo; his children, Scott (Lyn) of Baraboo, Duane (Sonja) of Baraboo; Ann (Kevin) Poole of Alexandria, Virginia, and Steven of Baraboo; one grandson, David of Baraboo; one sister, Verona Gray of Portage; two brothers, Clayton (Millie) of Pardeeville, and John (Dolly) of Portage; special friends, Tom and Pat Hunn of Ft. Atkinson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Thomas Fricke officiating. Brophy, Beaulah L. Beaulah L. Brophy, age 87, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2001, at St. Clare Meadows Care Center where she had spent the last 3 years of her life. She was born on March 10, 1914, in the township of Clinton, Wisconsin, the daughter of Maurice and Florence (Parr) Pierce. She married Walter Brophy on October 14, 1933 and he preceded her in death on April 14, 1969. Beaulah worked at St. Clare Hospital laundry for many years and enjoyed quilt making, crocheting and letters. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. In addition to her husband, Walter, she was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Kenneth and a son-in-law, Robert Touart, both in 1991; her brothers, Darold, Darwin, Ramon and an infant brother, Vincent Pierce. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Lorayne Touart of Hayward, Wis., and Ann (Zane) Adkins of Baraboo; her grandchildren, Dr. Mark (Shirlyn) Adkins, of Rochester, Minn., Deborah (Wayne) Ratliff of Waihawa, Hawaii, Chris (Steven) Ladewig of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Susan (Tom) Elliott of Clovis N. Me.; her great grandchildren, Michael and Bailey Adkins, and Brittany, Megan, and Lindsay Ladewig and Kyle Elliott; her sisters, Virgie Egge and Ramona (Gus) Ebert of Portage, Emma Eitland and Vera Compton of Viroqua, and Gloria Suiter of Janesville. Brown, ElDean R. ElDean R. Brown, 70, Reedsburg, died on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 in her home. She was born on Aug. 28, 1931 in Medford, the daughter of Martin and Esther (nee Wiedeman) Lemke. On Oct. 24, 1953 she married Arthur I. Brown. ElDean was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting in her spare time. Survivors include her husband, Arthur; one son, Ronald Brown, Reedsburg; one granddaughter, Lisa Brown, Reedsburg; three sisters, Darlene Polinske, Waukesha, Jean (Jack) Gale, Waukesha, and Juanita Krueger, Red Granite; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Yeager and Ivabelle Smith; one brother, William Lemke and one nephew, Steven Yeager. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Hoof Funeral Home with Pastor Amy Swanson officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. There was a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. The Hoof Funeral Home served the family. 

Buelow, Kenneth R. Kenneth R. Buelow, age 61 of Rock Springs died on Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 at his home. He was born on April 23, 1941 in Baraboo, Wisconsin the son of Walter and Gladys (Tischendorf) Buelow. He was married to Elaine Gee on May 4, 1963 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This marriage was blessed with two children. Kenneth was a Life Member of the North American Hunting Club. He was a hunter, fisherman and enjoyed gardening, canning and pinochle. He is survived by his wife: Elaine of Rock Springs; His son: Layne (Kelley) Buelow of Reedsburg; His daughter: Kennin (John) Tracey of Antigo, WI; Eight grandchildren: Heather, Brandin, Matthew, Leah, Jonathon, DaNay, Sydney and Abbey; His brother: James (Bonnie) Buelow of Haleyville, Alabama; His sisters: Barbara (Timothy) Wise of Pleasant Prairie, WI and Beverly Fridlington of Pleasant Prairie, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Farber Funeral Home, Reedsburg with Pastor Dan Kealiher officiating. Burgess, Edna. Edna Burgess, 82, passed away at the Reedsburg municipal hospital, June 26. She was born Dec. 2, 1883 in LaValle township to Jonathan and Mary Smith. Her marriage to John Burgess took place on January 15, 1907. Four children were born to this union, Kenneth and Merlin of Reedsburg, (Dorotha) Mrs. Harry Janechek of Wonewoc, and (Maurine) Mrs. John Wilms of Avalon. Survivors are her children; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Decot and Mrs. Earnest Seeley, LaValle; and Mrs. Clema Crownover of Edgerton, Wy; and one brother, Ernest Smith of Klamath Falls, Ore. Mrs. Burgess was preceded in death by her husband and one sister. She lived in the LaValle and Ironton area nearly all of her life. She was baptized in the Seventh Day Adventist church. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 29, in the Hammer funeral home in Reedsburg with Rev. Kenneth Waggoner of the Advent Christian church officiating. She was buried at the Resting Green Cemetery at Ironton. Delores Nash sang. Pallbearers were Hugh Brown, Henry Johnson, Philip, Morris, and Clinton Decot and Irvin Johnson.

Burmester, Evan H. Evan H. Burmester, age 62, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2002, at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. He was born on November 11, 1939, in Loganville, Wisconsin, the son of Herbert C. and Anita C. (Krueger) Burmester. He married Karen J. Girling on October 19, 1984 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Baraboo. He was a purchasing agent for Industrial Coils for many years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War Era as an Airman First Class and was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. He was also assigned on a TDY basis to Hawaii, Newfoundland and Bermuda. Evan was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served many years on the stewardship committee. He had served as a state officer for the Eagle's Club and was secretary of the Veteran's Honor Roll in Baraboo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harlan and an infant brother; and his father-in-law, James Girling. Evan is survived by his wife, Karen of Baraboo; one brother, Dean (Marian) Burmester of LaValle; one sister, Renee (Don) Urban of Wonewoc; a sister-in-law, Sharon (Duane) Peterson of Delafield; a brother-in-law, Victor Girling of Milwaukee; his mother-in-law, Genevieve Ramsey of Waukesha; and his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Steven and Deb Ohrtman officiating. Interment will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded at the grave. There will be a visitation at the church on Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and also from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burmester, Dorothy M. Dorothy M. Burmester, 69, Baraboo, died Tuesday, April 16, 1985 at her residence. Born in Ableman (now Rock Springs), she was the daughter of Reinholdt and Emma (Ziemke) Klitzke. A life-long area resident, she worked for many years as a waitress at the Warren Hotel, Herman's and Uphoff's. She also worked as a clerk for Fashionette. Besides her husband, Jack, Mrs. Burmester is survived by a brother, Kenneth, Tomah; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Evan (Virginia) Klitzke, West Baraboo; as well as two nieces and four nephews. Graveside services will be held at Walnut Hill Cemetery Friday at 1 p.m. with the Reverend John Heusmann officiating. Hanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Busch, Joachim. Joachim Busch was born in Plustorf, Pommern, Germany, February 15, 1843. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in the year 1857. The same year he began his career as sailor on the Atlantic Ocean with then, the well known Captain Eichmann. His first trip was from Cardif, England to Barcelonia on the sail boat Ontonia VanKleyer. He made many trips to Constantinople, Odessa, Alexandria, Rotterdam, Havana, Cuba. He also made several trips on the sail boats Gestitrat and Helkolia with Captain Bairuss and Captain Pora from Hull England to Hong Kong, China and many other parts of the world. In 1864 he came to America and was engaged as sailor on the Great Lakes. In 1868 he came to Reedsburg and was married to Maria Ringelmann and settled on a farm on Narrows Prairie. To this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter, William and Henry in Canada and Mrs. Emma Credelich of Reedsburg. His wife preceded him in death on November 5, 1919 and one son August on November 18, 1925. In 1910 he retired from active work and made his home with his daughter Mrs. Paul Credelich where he died of old age, on Friday, February 22, aged 86 years and seven days. He is survived by his daughter Mrs. Paul Credelich and four grandchildren and many friends. He was a faithful member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church for many years. Busch, August. August Busch, formerly of Narrows Prairie died at his home near Janesville, Wednesday, November 18, 1925 after an illness of about one year. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Busch and was aged about 45 years. He is survived by his wife, his father and a sister, Mrs. Paul Cridelich. The funeral was held last Saturday and burial was in the Footville cemetery. Mr. Joseph Busch, Mrs. Paul Cridelich and a cousin, Mrs. Otto Behn of this city attended the funeral. Busch, Fred. Fred Busch died last Saturday of heat prostration, while working on a building at Hillpoint. He was taken ill in the afternoon while at work. A physician was summoned but he sank rapidly. His wife was called but he died before she reached him. This death of a man highly respected is greatly regretted. As honest workman, a conscientious citizen and a kind home man has answered the summons and there are many to mourn. Fred Busch was born Oct. 7, 1855, in Plusdorf Pommern, Germany. When 15 years old with his parents he immigrated to this country. They settled in Chicago, later they moved on a farm on Narrows Prairie near Reedsburg. In 1877 he was married to Lettie Barringer of which two children were born, namely Bert and Claud; Bert died when two years old. Their first home being on a farm near Ableman, later they moved to this city, where Mr. Busch took up his former work as a carpenter and became an associate of the West Side Lumber Co. In 1899 misfortune befell him when his wife died and in 1902 his son, Claud, died at the age of 17 years old. In 1904 Mr. Busch was married to Minnie Muller of Wonewoc, and followed his occupation as carpenter in and about this city. Last week Mr. Busch went to Hillpoint to work on a farm house, when he suddenly became ill while at work on the building and relief came to him Saturday evening at 8 o'clock. He leaves to mourn his loss the bereaved wife, one brother, Jos. Busch of this city and sister, Mrs. Charles Wagner of Johnston, Nebraska. His age, 60 years, 9 months, 21 days. Rev. L. Busch, Katharine Maria Dorothea. Katharine Maria Dorothea Ringelmann was born in Flinten Province, Hanover, Germany, Aug. 13, 1842, and was baptized Aug. 28, by Rev. Kastendich. She came to America in August 1866, when twenty-four years old and made her home in Chicago. In 1868 she came to Reedsburg and was united in marriage to Joseph Busch by Rev. Lukas, and they made their home on a farm near Ableman where they lived for over fifty years. Four children were born to them: William in Canada, Henry in Canada, Mrs. Emma Cridelich at home, and August at Hanover, Wisconsin. Mrs. Busch retired from active farm duties nine years ago and has since lived with her daughter, Mrs. Paul Cridelich, who lives on the same farm. She passed away quietly last week Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, after two years of intense suffering from liver trouble, aged 77 years, 2 months and 24 days. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, three sons, and one daughter, also two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hinrichs of Reedsburg, and Mrs. Doris Licht of Kirschwein, Germany, and one brother, Henry Ringelmann of Ulzen, Germany, besides four grandchildren. The deceased was well known here and in this community, and highly respected. Her genial and jovial manner together with her industrious habits won her the large circle of friends which she enjoyed. Mrs. Busch was a long and faithful member of the St, John's Lutheran church. She was a noble woman, and a loving mother, and will be sadly missed in her home circle as well as by a large number of friends. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives.
