Johnsen Insurance Agency was founded in 1965 by Wilbur Johnsen who had been a company representative with Economy Insurance Company for eight years.  As a salesperson with Economy, he learned the art of personal service and took this skill with him to his own business. The agency started at 915 Ash Street in Baraboo and after a few years moved downtown to space above the Corner Drugstore.

In 1980 Wilbur’s son, Bill joined the business and soon brought computerization to the agency. In fact, Johnsen Insurance was the first insurance agency in Sauk County to use a computer, a Commodore 64 which ran software that Bill Johnsen designed. Bill purchased the insurance agency in 1988.

Today Johnsen Insurance is still family owned and operated with Mike Johnsen, the third generation, working in partnership with his dad. The agency has more than 1,000 commercial accounts statewide and offers a wide array of products for auto, home, health and business insurance needs.

Johnsen Insurance believes strongly in giving back to the community and does this in many ways. Bill Johnsen is an avid photographer and uses his skills to take breath-taking pictures of Baraboo and its people which have been used to promote the city, its attractions and its amenities.

The Sauk County Historical Society would like to thank Johnsen Insurance and Bill Johnsen for many years of generous support and thank them for their service to the community.
